We’re extremely proud to offer this technology to the Prescott Russell community and our patients. The Optomap® Retinal Exam raises the standard of care for eye health evaluations in several ways. It provides a digital image of the retina – which is the back of your eye – in a matter of seconds.

The Optomap® helps us detect eye conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and retinal tears or detachments. It also aids in detecting serious health issues such as diabetes and high blood pressure. It is important to understand that in most cases, you may not experience any signs or symptoms of eye disease.

Furthermore this latest version of Optomap includes Fundus autofluorescence (AF).  This imaging utilizes the natural fluorescence of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). These images can be used for diagnostic purposes as well as for monitoring disease progression. AF technology can be used in conjunction with existing imaging techniques to provide a more complete clinical picture. AF can easily identify areas of dead or dying tissue from areas of normal tissue. Disease diagnosis is possible by identifying characteristic patterns only seen in that disease and sometimes the use of AF imaging will identify disease that is not present or not easy to distinguish in a color fundus image.

These changes can occur across the retina and help to provide a full picture of the disease state.  AF greatly helps in the detection of Age‐related macular degeneration, Geographic atrophy, Central serous retinopathy, Inflammatory disease (uveitis, multifocal choroiditis), Inherited retinal disease (Stargardt’s, Retinitis pigmentosa). By adding AF to our patient care, during a single exam, we are providing our community with an elevated level of care.
